Dating Site Scam - Make sure you dont become a scam victim!

Dont be a scam victim!

Scam #2 - "Dating site Scam"

Yes scams happen on dating sites, more often then you think. There are many dating sites or meeting places on the internet. People will actually spend a month or two chatting with you, so that they become your "friend" to gain your trust first. They most often have fake pics showing a very good looking woman and tell you they want to meet or get married, all of it just go gain your trust. After some time has passed and you two have been chatting online, they have some excuse like they are working overseas and cannot cash a money order, and want you to do it for them. You figure it's someone you may be dating, so what harm can be done. This is also a variation of the fake money order scam or fake check scam. This is how they then try to scam you out of money after gaining your trust. Another method of the dating scam is they make you think they are running a business overseas and want you to mail them products, and they will send the products to your door to mail them, because they can't get products delivered overseas (or any other excuse, there are many excuses). They need you to simply send them the products. This should never be done. They are having stolen products delivered to your door, and these were bought using stolen credit cards. This is called "drop shipping" and you are the "drop ship". You are helping them by mailing them the products which they cannot get delivered without your help. Don't get caught up in any of these types of dating scams, trust no one you meet on the internet this way. If they are asking you to cash anything for them or help their business out in any way, even if you have been talking to them for a month or more .... be aware. Don't ever wire money because of a cashed money order, and don't send products to someone you have only met over the internet. There is always a reason why you never actually meet anyone in person as there is always some excuse they have!

The bottom line is simple. You can avoid almost all these types of scams by using common sense. If you think you may be getting scammed, you probably are.

Just follow 4 simple rules and you can avoid most scam attempts online:

  • If you get a check or money order over the internet, always confirm 4 to 5 days later by calling your bank to confirm any check or money order has "cleared" before sending any product. The bank will always tell you if it has cleared, wait for that.
  • Never wire money over the internet to someone ever. It doesn't matter what their excuse is, dont do it.
  • Don't open email attachments. This is how they spread viruses. Its easily faked, and easily can have embedded malware and viruses.
  • Never click website links in email. EVER. Use your bookmarks to go to bank websites, etc. (Email links are easily faked, so make it a rule!)
