what is the easiest way to know if I'm using alot of data or not on my phone.  For example I have 1 GB data plan but not sure how much that is

If its an iphone they go to the appstore icon and search on your carrier, they all have a free app that will show you exactly how much data usage you have used and how much you have remaining.  Thats the easiest method!

you can also check iphone settings and it shows you the data bytes in/out
