Posted by Guest - Installing New Ram.. :
Hello, I am encouraged to hear that if my computer has 2 slots for RAM (2 gigs total) and only one of them is filled (with 1 gig) that I can add another gig to the other slot without having to throw out or waste the original Ram stick previously installed. Here is my question. The 1 gig Ram that is currently installed is an Ultra DDR2 (ULT40051 1024MB PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz). Emphasis here on the PC2-5300. I think I need to order the exact same brand but it doesn't appear that Ultra makes a PC2-5300 anymore. They only have the PC2-5400. I have heard that they are the same thing, but if I want to leave my original 1 gig of RAM installed in the first slot, if it is a 5300, is it ok for me to install a 5400 in the 2nd slot? Thanks, this whole thing is so frustrating and I hope my question makes sense. I just need to know if a PC2-5300 can be used alongside a PC2-5400 if it is the exact same brand. Thanks!

You can find that out easily, and can probably buy the ram online, even the older one. But go to http://www.crucial.com and they have a program that you can run for free (I've used it many times) that will tell you what memory you have in your computer and what memory is compatible. That will answer any questions on what you can and can't do with different memory types, brands, etc
