I would like to translate lowercase letters to uppercase letters.  If so, you can do that with DFSORT's TRAN=LTOU function.  For example, if you want to translate the characters in positions 1-20 of your records, you can use these DFSORT statements:

   OPTION COPY
   INREC OVERLAY=(1:1,20,TRAN=LTOU)

If you're not familiar with DFSORT and DFSORT's ICETOOL, I'd suggest reading through "z/OS DFSORT:  Getting Started".  It's an excellent tutorial, with lots of examples, that will show you how to use DFSORT, DFSORT's ICETOOL and DFSORT Symbols.
