variable block sorts have a alot of parms in outrec, you also have parsing like ENDBEFR parameters, BUILD parameters and other parms, check the link which covers all of them. Variable sorts are quite different from fixed block sorts.

It isn't clear what you're asking. The SORT statement is used to SORT the file. For VB records, the first data byte starts in position 5, not position 1 since the RDW occupies positions 1-4. If you have "short records" (records that are shorter than the SORT fields you specify), you can use VLSHRT to handle that.
The OUTREC statement reformat records. For a VB file, you have to specify 1,4 (for the RDW) as the first field, and you can specify a position without length as the last field for the variable part. But exactly how you would code an OUTREC statement depends on what you're trying to do.
If you're not familiar with DFSORT and DFSORT's ICETOOL, I'd suggest reading through "z/OS DFSORT: Getting Started". It's an excellent tutorial, with lots of examples, that will show you how to use DFSORT, DFSORT's ICETOOL and DFSORT Symbols. You can access it online, along with all of the other DFSORT books, from:
