Main Question - Posted From Guest:
is there an easy way to identify if phishing emails are fake or not, I get those bank emails to update accounts all the time

Guest Says:
Well first of all the right thing to do is never click an email link that wants you sign on to a bank or financial company just because a link tells you to, and never click a link and fill in personal information like social security numbers, bank information, brokerage info, etc. You can always sign on to your bank via your favorites list instead of clicking email links which can route you to fake sites instead. There is a simple way to identify phishing emails though if you really want to just look at the details. In your email go the "details" section of your phishing email just for fun, if you are on free browser email like aol or yahoo, look for something called details, message source, more info, etc .... all emails have this detailed info that never gets shown but you can view it. Here is an example on one of mine: Received: from reibelserver.reibel.com.tr (mail.reibeltasimacilik.com.tr [195.33.222.126]) by rly-da03.mx.aol.com (v123.4) with ESMTP id MAILRELAYINDA038-a604a20cb5b14f; Sat, 30 May 2009 01:59:56 -0400 Received: from User ([83.229.5.235]) by reibelserver.reibel.com.tr with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.3959); Fri, 29 May 2009 18:51:17 +0300 What this is telling you is that the server that sent the fake "Wachovia" email is reibeltasimacilik.com.tr, which is a server in Turkey. Thats obviously a red flag. Next in the source it shows the website link for "update your account" going to : /da-guild.net/e107_plugins/alt_auth/images/wachovia.com/ Obviously da-guild.net is not wachovia.com. All the details after the first section of the URL is meaningless, they are trying to fake people out by putting the word wachovia at the end but thats meaningless. So if you really want to look through the details, you can see that there.
