Computer Not Finding Modem

I was just at a friend's house trying to install her NetZero. I do not have her computer in front of me so bear with me. NetZero says it's not finding the modem. So, I went into the Phone and Modem options and no modem was listed. Don't all computers come with one installed for dial-up use? Now, when I went to add a modem, it gave me a list because it couldn't locate one. Which one would I install? I tried several and NetZero still couldn't connect stating it didn't detect one. Can anyone give me a clue? I can go onto my computer to check out the set up options if you have some idea. Maybe they just don't have one installed? They bought the thing used. It's an IBM with XP on it from 2003, if that helps.

You need to know if there is a modem in the computer or not. Not all computers come with dialup modems anymore, is the a phone wire connection on the computer itself? (Not dsl modem but a phone line modem in the back or the computer?)
